What Not to Use
HORL ® Scissors For
HORL ® Scissors For
While the HORL ® scissors are extremely versatile and reliable, they of course don’t work on everything. Even premium scissors have limitations. Here’s what to avoid to prevent damaging your shears.
Bones
Since harder organic materials such as bones or fish bones always have the potential/risk of damaging the blade, it is not recommended to use them for this purpose. If they are used for this purpose, it is generally important to thoroughly clean the high-quality scissors before and after use when cutting meat, herbs, or any other food (even softer foods)—before use to remove grinding dust or similar and after use to completely remove food residues.
Thick or Hard Materials
HORL ® scissors are not meant for cutting heavy-duty materials like wood, metal, or wire. These materials can cause immediate damage to the blades, such as chipping or extreme dulling.
Abrasive or Fibrous Materials
To maintain long-term performance, keep your HORL ® Scissors away from sandpaper, steel wool, and other gritty or fibrous materials, as these can dull the cutting edge much faster than normal use.
Tips for Maximizing the Lifespan
of Your HORL ® Scissors
Investing in HORL ® Scissors is a wise decision that can provide a lifetime of reliable use, provided they receive proper care. Here are some important tips to preserve the lifespan of your scissors:
Check if they need to be sharpened: The consistency of sharpening depends on how much you use them and for what. One easy trick is to carefully run a cotton swab along the cutting edge of the scissor blades. If any cotton fibers are pulled out, it means there’s a burr or nick on the blade, and it needs to be sharpened.
Perfect your sharpening technique: To sharpen your HORL ® Scissors, first open the scissors wide with both hands until you feel a noticeable resistance and overcome it. You can then separate the two scissor halves. Now place one scissor half on its three contact surfaces—this allows the scissors to stand independently and perfectly at the intended 45° grinding angle. Secure it with your fingers and thumb in the handle eye and on the inside of the blade. Press a little on the scissor half while you roll the ceramic disc back and forth along the cutting edge for 30 seconds. After grinding the upper half, put the two scissor halves back together again. To remove any burrs, snip the scissors three to five times in the air. Afterward, carefully wipe off the grinding particles with a cloth. Now, repeat the steps to also grind the blade of the lower half of the scissors, which is marked with the HORL ® lettering.
Be smart about storage: It’s recommended to store your scissors in a dry place to avoid persistent moisture and humidity.
Follow these six simple steps to resharpen your HORL Scissors and restore their exceptional edge.
